This country inn really is in the country. Nestled in a natural bowl of the Blue Ridge Mountains, River House is an 1870s farmhouse with rooms and cabins open mid-February through December.
River House is in the Grassy Creek area of Ashe County, in the northwestern corner of North Carolina near Virginia and Tennessee. It overlooks the North Fork of the ironically named New River, the oldest in North America.
| River House is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, an easy drive to Grayson Highlands, Mount Jefferson, New River State Park, Bluff Mountain Nature Conservancy, and the Virginia Creeper Trail. In summer, you may wish to try New River Outfitters, Riverside Canoe & Tube Rentals or Zaloo’s Canoes, Kayaks & Tubes for a leisurely trip down the New.
|
|
| River House also has a few canoes, kayaks and tubes of its own, and we’d be delighted to drive you upstream and let you float back to the Inn.
Our equestrian guests are invited to check out the nearby Burnt Hill Stables. There are also two terrific golf courses in the county - Jefferson Landing and Mountain Aire.
|
| At River House, you set your own pace. There is a mile of riverfront for strolling, wading and fishing. There are walking trails that wind throughout our 170 acres.
The nearby towns of Jefferson & West Jefferson with galleries, quilting, pottery and antique shops, provide ideal spots for coffee or lunch.
Our Cookbook Library invites perusal.
Or maybe you’d rather relax in a rocker on the front porch, glass in hand, watching the river and the giant blue heron who claims it as home.

| For those of you who just can’t leave work at the office . . . We offer broadband wireless access with a remarkable "office view" from the comfort of our front porch!
