DIRECTIONS

From Asheville

Take 40 East from Asheville; turn onto 70 at Old Fort and continue until you turn left onto 221 North. Stay on 221 until you reach East Jefferson. 221 turns left (north) and merges with 16 North. From that point stay on 16 for about 10 miles until you get to the North Fork New River bridge. (It’s a new 3-lane bridge.) Turn left at the north end of the bridge onto Old Field Creek Road and bear right at the bottom of the little hill. Our land starts there at the bridge, and River House is the first building you come to, half a mile upriver on the right.

From the Blue Ridge Parkway

Exit at Deep Gap; take 421 West for about a quarter of a mile; turn right on 221 North. In East Jefferson, 221 makes a left turn and joins 16 North. From that point stay on 16 until you reach the North Fork New River bridge. (It’s a relatively new 3-lane bridge with a turning lane.) Turn left at the north end of the bridge onto Old Field Creek Road and bear right at the bottom of the little hill. Our land starts there at the bridge, and River House is the first building you come to, half a mile upriver on the right.

From Charlotte

Take I-77 North. Twenty-one miles past Statesville are two right-hand exits. The first is U.S. 421 South going to Winston-Salem. Take the next exit, immediately afterward, U.S. 421 North to Wilkesboro. About 20 minutes later you’ll get to Wilkesboro. Stay straight; do not take the Business route. At the fifth traffic light turn right onto 16 North. Set your tripmeter. Stay on 16, regardless of what it does, and at about 34 miles you will reach the North Fork New River bridge. (It’s a relatively new 3-lane bridge with a turning lane.) Turn left at the north end of the bridge onto Old Field Creek Road and bear right at the bottom of the little hill. Our land starts there at the bridge, and River House is the first building you come to, half a mile upriver on the right.

From Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill

Take I-40 West to Winston-Salem. The last Winston-Salem exit is U.S. 421 North going to Wilkesboro. Take that exit. Leave Winston-Salem on U.S. 421 North, going to Wilkesboro. About 45 minutes later you get to Wilkesboro. Stay straight; do not take Business route. At the fifth traffic light turn right onto 16 North. Set your tripmeter. From Kingsport, Bristol, Abingdon

Take I-81 north to Marion, Virginia. Turn right on 16 South. When you reach Mouth of Wilson, turn right as 16 does. You will cross over into North Carolina at Grassy Creek. Continue on 16. When you reach the North Fork of the New River - there is a relatively new bridge – DO NOT cross the bridge but turn right onto Old Field Creek Road and bear right at the bottom of the little hill. River House is the first building you come to, half a mile upriver on the right.

From Mount Airy

Go west out of Mount Airy on N.C. 89; turn left on N.C.18 (watch carefully; it’s easy to miss) to Sparta. Turn right on U.S. 21 North. Leave Sparta on U.S. 21 North. A few miles out of town U.S. 21 turns right going to Independence. Don’t. Stay straight on U.S. 221 for eight-tenths of a mile and veer right on 93. Stay on 93, making the right turn at the “T.” You will be in Virginia soon. Cross the bridge over the New River and turn left on U.S. 58 West. After 1.4 miles, turn left on 16 South at Mouth of Wilson. Take 16 South from Mouth of Wilson. After nine miles – you are back in North Carolina when you pass through Grassy Creek - you reach the North Fork of the New River; DO NOT cross the bridge but turn right on Old Field Creek Road and bear right at the bottom of the little hill. River House is the first building you come to, half a mile upriver on the right.

From Roanoke and Points North

Two interstates come down from the North. If you are taking I-81 South, turn onto I-77 South north of Wytheville. Take the Hillsville-Galax exit, turn right on U.S. 58 West. Go through Galax and Independence to Mouth of Wilson. Turn left on 16 South. Take N.C. 16 South from Mouth of Wilson. After nine miles, you reach the North Fork of the New River; DO NOT cross the bridge but turn right on Old Field Creek Road and bear right at the bottom of the little hill. River House is the first building you come to, half a mile upriver on the right.

From Sparta

Leave Sparta on U.S. 21 North. A few miles out of town U.S. 21 turns right going to Independence. Don’t. Stay straight on U.S. 221 for eight-tenths of a mile and veer right on 93.
