Sasha Papernik is a first generation Russian-American classical pianist, singer, and composer who draws on her dual heritage and wide range of talents to present concerts spanning genres and continents. Lauded for her "lightly transparent performances of Chopin and Scriabin," The Washington Post (July 2013) calls her "uncommonly attractive and entertaining...managing a comfortable balance of the formal and the casual."
A dedicated performer and educator, Sasha is a Teaching Artist for Lincoln Center Education and she is on the piano faculty of the Third Street Music School Settlement in New York City. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and the Manhattan School of Music.
Hailing from the rolling hills of North Carolina, guitarist Justin Poindexter is the descendent of a long line of southern storytellers. Specializing in American roots including jazz, country, blues, folk, and gospel, Justin mines America’s rich cultural history, linking music across genres and presenting it in new contexts. His songs and guitar picking have been featured in hundreds of venues from New York's Carnegie Hall to Nashville's Music City Roots to the famed Hue Festival in Vietnam.
A founding member of the acclaimed Americana music ensemble, The Amigos, Justin is a 2014 musical ambassador for the U.S. State Department's American Music Abroad Program.
We all need a little non-conformity these days. Glass Carnival, a circus of unique and extraordinary musicians featuring roots/jazz musician Justin Poindexter and singer/songwriter/pianist Sasha Papernik, will assemble an evening of song taken from and inspired by the 1967 classic film COOL HAND LUKE. Based on Donn Pearce's 1965 novel, the film version of Cool Hand Luke stars Paul Newman as a Luke Jackson, a prisoner who challenges the system in a Florida jail. Luke is sentenced to a stretch on a southern chain gang after he's arrested for drunkenly decapitating parking meters. Throughout his institutional tenure, he rages against authority, repeatedly escapes prison, and becomes the bad figure who the guards must make an example of to the other inmates.
