Strawberries Romanoff

The end of still another era!

I never knew her, but we were introduced. Sometime in 1957, I was invited by my friends Bobby Griffith and Hal Prince to the Warner Brothers set where “The Pajama Game” was being filmed. In a most unusual arrangement, the entire company of the hit Broadway show went Hollywood except for the female lead, The studio had insisted on at least one "name" and Doris Day took the part Janice Paige had played in the New York production.

I don't recall that any food was mentioned in Hernando's Hideaway - but then there was Romanoff's and I do recall the Strawberries. Sprinkle sliced berries with a bit of sugar and macerate for several hours in Grand Marnier and freshly squeezed orange juice. Gently fold the mixture into slightly softened vanilla ice cream and serve in your best crystal. Perhaps while watching the film. I am planning to do just that! A toast to Doris Day and to the wonderful creative and loyal show people of that day.
